Brie Bella Planning to Donate Breast Milk to NICU Twins

New mom and Total Divas star Brie Bella plans to donate her breast milk after a visit to the NICU to see two twin boys. She and her husband, Daniel Bryan who is also the General Manager for WWE Smackdown Live, gave birth to their first child, Birdie Joe on May 9. The new parents are loving being parents to a baby girl, with Bryan spending most of his paternity leave looking after Brie as she looks after Birdie Joe.

Fortunately, Bella’s pregnancy and the first few months after the baby’s birth have gone smoothly. Now, the couple is taking the opportunity to help other parents whose journeys have hit a few bumps, especially when it involves breastfeeding their newborns. The reality star posted a special message on Instagram about a new cause she is involved with.

The new parents visited the NICU of a local hospital where they learned about other mothers’ struggle to breastfeed their babies. This could be due to numerous reasons, from a biological inability to produce breast milk or maternal intake of medications that could hamper breast milk production. Bella and Bryan also met the parents of twin newborns named Hector and Pablo, who were being kept in an incubator in the NICU. The parents have made the decision to accept breast milk donations for their babies. According to their mother, they decided to accept breast milk donations because her own breast milk is not enough, and they know that the boys need breast milk to get them through their NICU stay.

This visit to see the twins is especially significant to Bella since she is a twin herself. The former WWE Divas Champion shared that she had extra breast milk stored in her freezer and she didn’t want it to go unused or thrown away. “If babies can benefit from it, then I want to do this,” she added.

The twins’ parents could not have been more grateful for this act of generosity from another new parent. Before Bella and her husband left, she hugged the parents. “You’re going to help a lot of babies,” the twins’ father told her.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding is recommended for babies under six months old. Breast milk is all-natural and it contains all the complete nutrients and antibodies a baby needs for development in the first few months of life. For premature babies in the NICU, having access to breast milk can drastically improve their chances for a fast and normal recovery and development. The AAP specifically recommends breast milk for premature babies since the antibodies in breast milk can help babies fight off bacteria, reduce chances of infection and complications arising from infections. Today, there are 23 accredited milk collection centers in the country that allow mothers to donate extra breast milk for use in the NICUs all over the country.
