Olympian Misty May-Treanor Introduces Twin Daughters Mele and Mia

The family of beach volleyball superstar Misty May-Treanor continues to grow. The latest additions: a set of healthy fraternal twins. In a PEOPLE Magazine feature article, the Olympian introduces daughters Mele and Mia alongside big sister Malia.

May-Treanor is known as one of the greatest beach volleyball players in the world with three Olympic gold medals alongside partner Kerri Walsh. Nicknamed “The Turtle”, she made her way to the sand to earn 112 championship titles in local and global events.

Despite several early setbacks, she was able to find her niche and excel in her chosen sport. She turned professional in 1999 as a college senior on the AVP tour. By the time she graduated, she was part of the US National Volleyball Team. That didn’t last long, however, as she was more interested in playing on the sand than the court.

The shift was rewarded with immediate success as she was named Rookie of the Year in 2000 and got into the Sydney Olympics. The medals would have to wait until she teamed up with Kerri Walsh. Together they dominated the sport for over a decade. Their last Olympics was the London games.

She announced her retirement from the sport in 2012 to start a family with husband Matt Treanor. They were married back in 2004 while they were starting their respective sporting careers. Their first child came in 2014 when Misty gave birth to Malia Barbara. This November, they welcomed twin daughters Mia and Mele to the household.

The 40-year old May-Treanor has been slowly introducing the twins to the world, including the women’s volleyball team that she now coaches: the Long Beach City College Vikings. The athletes were photographed gathering around the stroller, their faces lit up at the sight of the little twins.
