Serena Williams Joins the Fight Against Domestic Violence

Serena Williams Joins the Fight Against Domestic Violence and Says Daughter Olympia is Her Inspiration

Tennis star Serena Williams joins the crusade to stop domestic violence. Her passion is driven by her wanting to be a strong role model for her 9-month-old daughter and women suffering from not only domestic and financial violence.

Williams has joined forces with Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse initiative where she hopes she can speak up for others that are not able to do so.

At a event held on Wednesday for the strategy the tennis champ said, “These women probably can’t use their voice so it’s important for them to know that there are people out there that are using their voice and letting them know that there is a place, that we can do something about it.”

As stated by Allstate, one in four women will experience domestic violence at some point in their lives, and 99 percent of cases being financial abuse. The startling statistics hit the 36-year-old new mother hard.

“Having a daughter means that she’s one in four. Hopefully, those stats don’t go up by the time she’s dating and meeting people, but they can if you don’t make people aware of it,” she said.

“Domestic abuse is a subject that people are not really comfortable talking about, but sometimes talking about the uncomfortable is what we have to do,” Williams said. “We’re doing that now with Me Too, with Times Up, and I feel like we’re making those steps. We want to make this a movement.”

Williams is a known advocate for equal pay and women’s rights in the sports arena. Serena has been known to not keep quiet and sit on the sidelines and reminds women that their voice is important if there are going to be changes made. Her greatest words of advice she could give to her daughter and other women is, “always speak up, and from the first day.”

She continued, “If you keep letting it go on, the situation gets worse and worse until you’re just completely downtrodden.”

As a mother of a daughter, Serena’s wish is that young boys are educated from a young age on what is acceptable and unacceptable. She also believes that men need to join the crusade and become more supportive of women. She ended by saying, “It’s a human rights issue. We should just want to be better humans.”

Not to outdo her wife and mother duties, Serena’s professional resume is beyond impressive. Serena is such an accomplished athlete, with the most Grand Slam titles in singles (23 titles), doubles (14 titles) and mixed doubles, with four Olympic Gold medals, the fact that she is a 5-time winner of the WTA Tour Championships, that she was the highest paid female athlete in 2016 and 2017, and in 2015, she started with her own clothing line for HSN.

“I’ve always wanted to be a mom, but I never seemed to have time with my career. Then it just happened and I just dove right in. It is so natural for me. I love it. I love her so much. We have a great little family going on.”

Serena married Alexis Ohanian, 34, the co-founder and Executive Chairman of Reddit, in November 2017. The busy couple and their 6-month-old daughter live in most of the time in their luxurious Beverly Hills home, which they bought in the fall of 2017 for $12 million.

We are rooting for Serena both on the court and off. Here’s to many wins and another beautiful child for this winning family!

Victoria Beckham wasn’t the only one celebrating when daughter Harper took her first steps recently – Eva Longoria, Harper’s godmother, also got to share in the excitement.

“I was in L.A. [when Harper took her first steps],” Longoria, 37, told PEOPLE at Lay’s “Do Us a Flavor” contest in New York Friday. “I saw the Tweet, but Victoria had emailed me a picture earlier.”

Longoria also celebrated Harper’s first birthday with the Beckhams in L.A. before they flew off to London.

As for the rumors that Longoria is dating New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, the Desperate Housewives star put to rest any gossip. “We’re just friends,” she said.

The two had been seen together on several date-like outings, including a supermarket trip near Sanchez’s Bedminster, N.J., home. But, as Longoria puts it: “I am happy where I am in my life. Very happy.”

She also mentioned that she’ll be rooting for good friend Serena Williams during the Summer Games, adding that watching tennis on TV is one of her favorite pastimes. Williams recently won her fifth women’s singles title at Wimbledon, and is reportedly resting her back before competing in the London Olympics.

Ryan Lochte, Here Are 20 Reasons We’d Like To Go For A Swim With You

We’re getting really excited for the summer Olympics around here, guys. And today’s number one reason? Ryan Lochte. Today, Lochte qualified fastest in the 200-meter freestyle prelims at 1:48:14. He’s the world champion in the event, FYI, after beating Michael Phelps for the title last year in Shanghai. Lochte also beat Phelps in their first final at the Olympic trials on Monday when he won the 400 individual medley on Monday. You know how else the gold-medalist is beating Phelps? In the eye candy department.

Lochte, 27, is from Daytona Beach, Florida and majored in sculpting his abs and perfecting his tan — er, we mean sports management, at the University of Florida. He came home from Beijing in 2008 with three gold medals, two silver and one bronze. And in 2009, he managed to become the first swimmer to set a world record since the ban on performance enhancing suits. So he’s got more than just fantastic bone structure and a perfectly chiseled torso.

Since the championships, he’s been training for the Olympics with Coach DeLancey who praised Lochte in Men’s Health in its July/August issue: ”I’ve worked with some tough athletes. There’s none tougher than Ryan. He’s not afraid to throw up.” Ew. But we totally admire his need to achieve!

“Pain, tolerance, endurance — when it comes down to that point, there’s always something left,” Lochte says. “You just have to find it.”

We’ll leave the pain and vomiting to Ryan. We’re all about pleasure here, which you will find as you check out these 20 drool-worthy photos:

Fast facts about Ryan, from his USA Swimming bio:

His favorite international destination: Rome

Favorite musician: Lil Wayne
